He is a graduate of Yale University and Yale Law School, and has litigated many First Amendment cases, including Texas v. Johnson and United States v. New York Times columnist Anthony Lewis has called him "one of the country's great legal voice for civil liberties today," and former CIA Director James Woolsey has called David's new book, Enemy Aliens: Double Standards and Constitutional Freedoms in the War on Terrorism (2003)," the essential book in the field." David's first book, No Equal Justice: Race and Class in the American Criminal Justice System, was named Best Non-Fiction Book of 1999 by the Boston Book Review, best book on an issue of national policy in 1999 by the American Political Science Association, and awarded the Alpha Sigma Nu prize from the Jesuit Honor Society in 2001. Mr. Cole is The Nation's legal affairs correspondent and a professor at Georgetown University Law Center, is the author of No Equal Justice: Race and Class in the American Criminal Justice System (New Press), co-author, with James X. Dempsey, of Terrorism and the Constitution: Sacrificing Civil Liberties for National Security (New Press) and author of Enemy Aliens: Double Standards and Constitutional Freedoms in the War on Terrorism (New Press).

The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) is our nation's guardian of liberty. We work daily in courts, legislatures and communities to defend and preserve the individual rights and liberties guaranteed to every person in this country by the Constitution and laws of the United States. Our job is to conserve America's original civic values - the Constitution and the Bill of Rights.

Tampa: Safe AND Free is an organization of concerned individuals and community groups proposing a resolution to the Tampa City Council to defend our freedoms and rights locally against the USA Patriot Act and other federal assaults against our State and Federal Constitutions.
